Amarillo truly embodies the spirit of the Old West, with buildings dating to the period, desert canyons and the iconic highway, Route 66. The area around Route 66 (now Sixth Avenue) is a can’t-miss shopping destination. Nicknamed “antique row,” it’s filled with shops selling rare items, as well as distinctly Texan dining. Downtown Amarillo features more modern attractions, like fine restaurants, art galleries and museums, as well as the Amarillo Zoo. At the outskirts of the city, beautiful desert landscapes begin, as well as lots of outdoor activities. Amarillo dining boasts a wide variety, but you can’t go wrong with Mexican and beef. The city is also home to regional medical centers.
